Tell us a little bit about yourself!
Hi, my name is Justin Gerhard, I’m an actor living in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and I run The Gay Men Channel on YouTube. I love horses, Oprah, and the Titanic.
What type of content do you make?
I make content that speaks for gay men. Some of it’s funny, some more serious. I like to comment on current events, and also push people to think about things from a different perspective.
How long have you been a YouTuber?
I’ve been running The Gay Men Channel for three years.
What inspired you to start your channel? What were you doing before becoming a YouTuber?
I was inspired by The Gay Women Channel, and it was them asking me to be the host of their second channel, The Gay Men Channel, that got me started in the YouTube world. Then eventually I took over the channel by myself, and have run it ever since. Before doing YouTube I was pursuing my acting career, which is still a huge part of my life as a YouTuber.
What inspires you to create?
What inspires me to create is anything and everything that speaks to me in the world around me. As an actor, I am constantly hyper-aware of what is going on around me, the stories that are unfolding daily, and that is all inspiration for what I then want to create to mirror what I’m seeing. It could be anything. It’s being in tune with what sparks live within me, and then being able to create something to share those with the world.
What do you want your audience to know about becoming a YouTuber? Any advice for young fans who turn to YouTube for an escape?
My advice for young YouTubers is to take risks, from which mistakes will be made, and from those mistakes you will learn, and then make more mistakes and learn more about who you are. YouTube is about authenticity, and you have to make the time to figure out what that means for you. Being authentic means knowing yourself, and that takes work. Do the work!
Where do you see The Gay Men Channel going in five years?
I have some really exciting changes coming up on The Gay Men Channel, which I’m going to leave as a surprise. It’s still gonna be gay AF, I am just shifting the focus to something that is a little more inclusive!! Stay Tuned:)
