VidCon 2017 is fast approaching! Taking place in Anaheim, California from June 21 to 24, the star-studded online video event is rounding up to be a memorable one. This year, the super talented Leroy Sanchez is a featured creator which means you can get up, close and personal with the BBTV partner and YouTube star at three exclusive events. Leroy will be wooing fans with his amazing vocals at a live performance on June 21 on the Festival stage, hosting a Meet & Greet on June 22 at the Anaheim Convention Centre, and participating in an interesting Creator Keynote session on June 24. With a full VidCon schedule ahead, Leroy shared his thoughts about becoming a YouTube star, how important his fans are to him, and the creative process behind choosing his next cover. Hi Leroy! How did you get started on YouTube? What was your inspiration for starting a music channel on YouTube?
I started my YouTube channel in 2007 because I had a video I wanted to share with my friends of a performance we all did at our High School for Christmas (which is not there anymore). That’s when I discovered YouTube and I fell in love with it. I would spend hours watching different videos until one day I discovered covers. I would watch people singing covers in their room day and night. I always loved singing so I felt very inspired by all these people from all over the world sharing their passion. So one day I decided I wanted to know what other people thought of my singing and that’s how I started uploading videos on YouTube.
How do you choose the next song you’ll be covering?
I’ll choose my next song if it’s been stuck in my head or if I feel like singing certain song depending on my mood or whatever that’s going on in my life. I do look at new releases and check what’s new and if there’s something I like I might cover it but I don’t care how popular the song is, if I don’t like it or it doesn’t resonate with me I won’t do it.
What’s the one song on the radio right now that you just can’t help belt out when it comes on?
Bruno Mars “That’s What I Like”.
This isn’t your first time at VidCon, so tell us what was your favourite memory from last year?
Getting to meet the fans at the Meet & Greet, without a doubt.
What you are looking forward to most at this year’s Vidcon?
I’m really looking forward to performing again because I have lots of new music to share, and also looking forward that Meet & Greet once again.
What are the three most essential items you need when you’re on the VidCon floor?
Water, Phone Charger and a Polaroid.
How excited are you to get to spend time with your fans? What’s the energy like inside?
I can’t wait! They’re always so kind and so nice! The energy couldn’t be better, they always end up putting a smile on my face.
What has been the biggest change in your life since becoming a YouTube star?
The biggest change is that now I get to do music for a living which is a total dream come true. I’m extremely lucky and thankful that I get to do what I love every day.
