Being a part of the #BBTVfam allows our creators to express their awesome personalities, interests, and personal style, but it also connects them to a community of cool people looking to make a difference in the world. Recently our partner Dawko from the Dawkogames channel made a major impact by organizing a charity live stream aka charity stream on his channel that raised a ton of money for WWF.
The charity stream was an amazing success – thanks to Dawko’s determination and his amazing followers who donated a total of $30,000 over one weekend! As a part of #BBTVfam Week, we asked Dawko to shed some light on charity streams and creators’ impact on the world. Check out our interview below:
Hey, Dawko! You just hosted a weekend-long 12 hour charity livestream on your channel that raised over $30,000 for WWF. Tell us what sparked this idea of a charity stream in the first place?
I’ve been doing charity streams for over 2 years now, what sparked me to start doing events like this was because I finally thought I had enough support from my audience to start making a difference together. Ever since the first charity stream back in March raising over $250,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, it made me realize how much we can make a difference to charities across the globe.
What is it about your followers and their willingness to donate that made this charity stream so successful?
I think it’s the whole community what makes the events so successful, not just donations. As some cannot donate, they share the stream with their friends and family and social media which may bring in someone who can donate. Also they are so positive about the events, their excitement really motivates me while livestreaming and everyone else who is watching, it’s just fantastic to see. That’s why these charity events are so great, they bring everyone together for amazing causes.
There are so many wonderful charity organizations out there that need our support, how and why did you decide to help out WWF?
I chose WWF because I am very passionate about the protection of our planet. WWF are an amazing charity who work so hard to protect and save so many endangered species across the globe, as well as preserving their habitats. As the human population is growing more and more, and climate change is worsening, sadly even more animals and environments are suffering. So I thought I should not only try to raise as much money as possible for them, but to also educate people about WWF and the importance of wildlife and climate change. But like I said earlier, I also do other charities too, and will be doing more in the future!
How do you think your YouTube charity stream differs from other (more traditional) fundraising methods?
I honestly believe online charity events are fantastic, it’s a great way to get donations from across the world, not just one area or country. I’ve seen many other successful charity livestreams raise millions!
Do you think charity streams will continue to become a popular genre on YouTube?
Oh yes for sure! And I really hope so! I will be doing lots more charity events on YouTube until my YouTube career is over (hopefully forever) ;)!
Considering the little road bumps with PayPal shutting down the WWF account from too many donations, what did you learn from this experience that will help you with future charity streams?
The PaypPal issue was a very unlucky issue, it’s the first time it’s ever happened during my charity events, in the future, let’s hope it never happens again! I honestly believe we dealt with the problem as best as we could. We stopped the livestream, contacted PayPal and WWF, and then began the livestream once again the next day with the issue somewhat resolved. Basically people could donate via card payments, but not PayPal. I honestly do think we would have raised more if PayPal donations were fixed, but hey, things happen and we raised a lot for an amazing cause!
You have a great fanbase that banded together to donate $30,000 over a few days, what would you like to say to your fans?
I would like to give a huge thank you to everyone who watched, shared, or donated to the WWF Charity Livestream. WWF is such a great charity and they deserved every single penny that was donated to them. Hopefully I will see some of you in October when we will be doing another charity livestream for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital! I would also like to give a massive thank you to Scott Cawthon, the creator of Five Nights at Freddy’s, who continually donates a huge amount of money to each of my charity events, he is incredible.
